Grout cleaning in your office bathroom is a task that needs to be done often. Grout that (usually) white filler between tiles seems to get dirty almost overnight. Especially in office bathrooms, where many people use the facility each day, there is little chance that the grout will stay clean. The usual tips for keeping grout clean such as removing shoes and wiping with a damp cloth, aren’t doable in an office bathroom. And, should the weather be stormy and the path to the office muddy, you will have dirty grout almost instantly. As grout is made of a porous material, it will absorb dirt and grime quickly. Hopefully, your office will have a professional cleaning service who will nightly go over the grout in the bathroom, but this is not always the case. So how can you clean the grout in your office without scrubbing?

There are several ways grout can be cleaned without scrubbing:

  • Use any one of the commercially available grout cleaning products. Instructions will be on the container, which is usually a spray bottle though there are some powders as well.
  • Many people prefer to use environmentally safe cleaning solutions made by themselves to clean grout without scrubbing. Here are some ideas: (this list is made for tiles that are not marble, travertine, or slate, as this porous stone damages easily when certain chemicals are used to try to clean them.)
    1. Use white vinegar directly on the grout. Let stand for 10 minutes and then rinse and air dry. A few drops of essential oil with eliminate the offensive smell.
    2. Make a mixture of ½ cup baking soda and ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide, stirring until the consistency is like paste. Add 1 teaspoon of mild liquid dish detergent. Stir well and apply to grout with an old toothbrush. Let this application stand for about 10 minutes. Wipe the mixture off the grout and rinse the grout. Let the grout air dry for several hours before walking on it.
    3. Combine 2 cups of water, ¼ cup lemon juice, ¼ cup vinegar, and ½ cup baking soda. Mix well and apply the solution to the grout. Let the cleaning agent stay on the grout for 15 minutes, then rinse with a towel and warm water. Sometimes a little elbow grease will be needed on stubborn stains by using a stiff brush dipped in baking soda. Let the grout dry for several hours.

 

After you have cleaned the grout, it is important to apply a sealer to ensure the grout stays clean longer. There are several grout sealers on the market, and you want to use one that best suits your tile type. To apply, follow the directions on the box or bottle.

It is especially difficult for someone unable to climb a ladder if a ceiling fan is high up. Blades and the housing need to be cleaned, and if there are lights with the fan, these need to be cleaned as well. Here are some ideas to help you tackle the job of cleaning a ceiling fan: (always be sure the fan and any lights are turned off)

  • Reasonably high ceiling fans: these fans can be dusted regularly with a fan duster sprayed with a chemical that collects dust. Most hardware stores carry these dusters, which essentially are a small, elongated cloth mop with a long pole handle. If you can’t find the special fan duster, you can make one using a soft cloth wrapped tightly around a broom. You can also use the extension tool for your vacuum to carefully reach up and vacuum the dust. Remember to dust both the top and bottom of each fan blade. Once you have completed the planning for the rooms, hallways, and closets, you can begin to think about the finishing touches, those special touches that make a house a home. Paint: painting (and sometimes wallpapering) will make or break a room. Color choice is of course of major concern, but there are other considerations as well. What type of paint will you use on your walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinets? In areas of high usage such as lower walls, and doors you will want a paint that is durable and washable. There is also the choice of plain or textured walls and ceilings. Cupboards can be painted or finished wood. Choose colors that you are comfortable with and will also blend in with your furnishings. Neutral colors such as off white, cream, light beige or gray are considered the best for over-all use, but many people like a bit more color and that is fine. Especially in areas like the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms color adds a lot to the cheerfulness of the room. Children’s room need color to brighten their every-day outlook.

Window dressings: So many to choose from, it is difficult to know what will work best. There are different kinds of blinds to keep out light. Make sure when selecting blinds you will be able to clean them without a great deal of trouble. Curtains and drapes can be a lovely addition to a room, especially the living room and bedrooms. Here too, you want to make sure you can keep the curtain and drapes clean. Some fabrics will need to be dry cleaned only, and that can get expensive. Many people prefer blinds with a valance over the top. This is very attractive and lets in light with a splash of color over the window.

Flooring: Another essential part of home planning is what type of flooring to have in each room. Some people like the same flooring such as wood or tile throughout the house while others like a variety of floor styles. Again, there are many styles to choose from including wood, tile, linoleum, laminate, and vinyl. You will want to consider what type of usage the floors will receive and then base your choice on the characteristics of floor type. For example, are there young children? Do you have pets with large paws? Are there elderly who might slip and fall easily?  Also, the type of floor you choose will need maintaining. How much time will you have or want to have taking care of the floors you choose?

Carpets: More and more homes are doing without carpets in all but the bedrooms. Carpets take a lot of time and expense to maintain and today’s busy homemakers, be they men or women, want to simplify the job of home maintenance. Having as little carpet as possible is one way of keeping maintenance hours and cost down. If you do decide on carpet, there are many styles and types to choose from. Visit a carpet store and take your time investigating durability, type of maintenance needed, and cost to install, including padding. Once you have decided on the carpet best suited to your needs, there will usually be a variety of colors and patterns from which to choose. Before making your final choice, consider children, pets, and elderly as a white or light-colored carpet for these users could be a disaster.

By now you will have spent hours and hours planning your dream home, but in the end, it will be worth it. Generally, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity so you will be glad you took your time in creating the vision you have. If there are others who will be living in the home, including children, it is a good idea to involve them in the planning as well. All the major rooms in the house have been looked at in our Building the Home of Your Dreams series, so it is time to tie things together with closets, hallways, laundry room and, if appropriate a den/office. No home is complete without these considerations, and though it may seem unimportant to take the time to plan them, they need careful attention as the major rooms did. For example, a home with too narrow hallways or inadequate storage will soon stop being a dream come true. Here are suggestions for making these extras a vital and useful part of your planning:

Closets: Depending on the number, ages, and sex of those living in the home will greatly influence how many and the size of the closets that will be needed. An older couple will not need the number of closets a family of four girls will need. Closets can be built-in bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and sometimes near outside entrance doors for coats, boots, hats, etc. Make sure the closets are age-appropriate when putting up hanging rods. A young child cannot reach too high, and if he or she is to help keep their bedroom tidy, they must be able to hang up their clothes. Shoes, hats, purses, and other types of accessories can be kept in a closet. Strategic shelving both over the hanging bar and under it, as well as along the end wall, is helpful. Some people put stacking drawers in their closets as well as shelves. Walk-in closets are wonderful when budgets permit. Be sure to put a light in any size closet to make finding items easier.

Hallways: Hallways connect the home and create the travel pattern people will take moving from one area to another. It is important that hallways are convenient to a smooth flow of traffic. Also, make sure when planning hallways to consider their width. If the occupants are elderly or will be in a few years, it is wise to have hallways wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Too, in the future, if the house is sold, it will have better selling power with wide hallways. Hallways are often used to display pictures so plan for this as well.

Laundry room: Few homes today are without a laundry room. Sometimes a budget can only tolerate a small area for this, but careful planning will make the most out of even a small space.

Washers and dryers come in different sizes and can be stacked if necessary, for small spaces. Be sure to include some shelving in your laundry room to hold washing products. It is helpful if there can be enough shelves to organize other cleaning products as well as a closet for such items as a vacuum cleaner, broom, and mop.

Den/office: While an extra room to be used as a den or office isn’t necessary, it is great to have when the budget allows. In today’s world of computers, it is helpful to have an area set apart where a door can be closed to shut out the extra noise, and a space just for computer and laptop use is available. Too, if a lot of time will be spent doing computer work, it is essential to have the correct type of chair to help prevent back strain. Now you can buy stand-up computer desks with an attached treadmill to further guard against health problems associated with sitting long hours at a desk. Windows for natural light, when possible, and proper inside lighting to guard against eye strain are also a must.

You will be wise to take your time in planning and designing closets, hallways, laundry room, and den/office. Not enough storage, too narrow and not well placed hallways, cramped laundry room, and unattractive, unfunctional den/office can, in time, turn a dream home into a nightmare.
